We have no goalkeepers

Marlon - now out of contract
Stan says he is going to sit down and talk to Marlon Beresford this week about a deal that could see him become a Claret until the end of next season but much as he would like to stay Marlon has said he would without any doubt consider other offers.

Should such an offer come in this week that would be better for Marlon financially and in length of contract then there is every chance he could be playing for someone else by next Saturday.

With Nik Michopoulos on loan that leaves James Salisbury as the only other keeper at the club and he is currently injured. This meant that the youth team had to make use of a 15 year-old schoolboy, Michael Hale, on Saturday in their Youth Alliance fixture at Gawthorpe.

Nik is on an instant recall from Palace but clearly he is no longer considered as a long term answer or he would not be at Palace in the first place. Not just that but incredibly he was allowed to play in their Worthington Cup tie last week and this could cause Burnley a big problem.

Should Marlon sign but then pick up an injury or a suspension that makes him unavailable for the Tottenham game then we would have no ready replacement with Nik Michopoulos unavailable. There is little chance of us throwing in Salisbury and that would mean us having to sign another goalkeeper. Then it would have to be one who has not been cup tied and one whose club are probably already out of the competition and that would make that scenario more difficult.

Just how a club at this level, no matter what the financial state, can get itself into such a mess regarding such an important position on the field takes some believing and we can only hope that we go part way to sorting it out this week by getting Marlon on a new deal. I would suggest that he has more than earned it with his performances in Yorkshire this week.
