We have amateur people in a professional field

Hegley was the referee when the Clarets went down 4-2 to Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium two seasons ago, a game that saw Hegley hand out seven yellow and two red cards when his only decision should have been to call it off because of the fog.

He sent off Gareth Taylor for a head butt but then sent off Dean West for preventing a goal scoring opportunity when he handled the ball in the other half of the field, and then when it had been blasted at him from a yard away.

That was nothing to the blast that Stan Ternent gave Hegley after the game, claiming, “"We have amateur people in a professional field and with all due respect I’m not the first person to say it and I won’t be the last. People pay good money to watch football and it is destroyed by poor refereeing standards. It is just criminal in my book."

We haven’t seen the over fussy Hegley since but last season he calmed down in regard to cards and handed out just 83 yellow and 5 red cards in 31 games, well below the average. And of those 83 yellow cards an incredible 18 of them came in two games so he is still likely to have a day when the card keeps coming out.

Thankfully this season has been a quieter one for him so far with just nine yellow cards in six games to date and in two of those games he hasn’t handed out a single yellow card. We can but hope.

He will be assisted by Andy Haines (Tyne & Wear) and Alec Clyde (South Yorkshire).
