We get our first point and the window closes

Ahead of the weekend, Crystal Palace filled their managerial vacancy. For a while it looked as though next to no one wanted it, and those that did were ineligible due to overuse of phone texting.

So, Palace turned to an old favourite and gave the job to Neil Warnock who had enjoyed a previous spell as manager there between October 2007 and March 2010 when he jumped ship from the club then in administration to QPR.

He got off to a bit of a flyer at Newcastle. They were in front in the very first minute and eventually needed to equalise deep into stoppage time to get a point from a 3-3 draw, but, after our draw against United, it was the top of the league where I was again impressed by Chelsea.

It's not often I get the opportunity to watch the tea time game on a Saturday. I'm either travelling home from an away game or getting on with updating Clarets Mad if we've played at home. With us having kicked off early it gave me the chance to see whether Jose Mourinho's team really were as good as they'd looked at the Turf 12 days earlier.

They scored three against us but they doubled that at Goodison in an astonishing 6-3 win. Even now, with just three games gone, it looks as if they will take some stopping.

Interestingly, they share top billing with Swansea, the other team that's beaten us, so that puts our results so far into some sort of perspective.

Then came Monday's transfer scramble, the crazy day much loved by Sky but not by clubs and managers. We've made our last minute signings over the years. Steven Caldwell arrived very late in January 2007 as did Michael Kightly last August in a loan deal from Stoke.

Last time we were in the Premier League the window slammed shut at 5 p.m. with David Nugent just getting his smiling face through before it was bolted, but this time we always thought we might be more major players than previously.

We were first in. George Boyd completed a move from Hull on a three year contract even before Peter Stevenson had been able to get his gazebo set up in the car park. He got an interview with our new man, whose hair hangs longer than Ralph Coates's did when it all fell on one side.

Good business it was thought and things looked even better early in the afternoon when Nathaniel Chalobah signed in on a four month loan from Chelsea.

Boyd has an eye for a goal, just the one according to Nottingham Forest, but it is Chalobah who has found the Turf Moor net, giving Watford the lead against us in December 2012 in a game that also saw Charlie Austin score from the spot in a 1-1 draw.

Then it all went quiet. Would there be anything else? Sean Dyche hinted that there might be but as time went on it looked less and less likely.

We hadn't given up. I'm always at the Turf on the first Monday in the month at a supporters clubs meeting and when I left at 9 p.m. the lights were still on in the offices and key Turf Moor figures were still there. If there was nothing more happening then it would have been likely they'd have packed up and gone home.

Names came and went but just before the 11 p.m. shut down I got an alert that something was happening with Man United defender Michael Keane, but, even so, the window closed with no news.

Then came the confirmation that we'd asked for an extension to get a deal done before the final news that Keane was also coming for four months, and that was around 1:20 a.m.

It had been a long day. Sky might love it but I reckon it gets a bit tedious having reporters outside grounds with a load of wannabe fans looking stupid behind them. Somehow I can't see things changing any time soon.

In total, the 20 Premier League clubs have made a total of 169 signings. We made ten with Hull, Leicester, Swansea and West Brom leading the way with eleven each. Arsenal, including the late capture of Danny Welbeck, made just five, the least of all the club.

But, ultimately, it is welcome to George Boyd, Nathaniel Chalobah and Michael Keane. Those fans who tend to be positive have concluded it was a good day, those not quite so positive perhaps still need to be convinced.

Now we have to submit our 25 man squad to the Premier League. I make it that we have just 25 players over the age of 21 so that fits very nicely for us up to the next window.

And looking back to the weekend, below are the last results and stats, the leading goalscorers which now show Diego Costa on top with four, the club's disciplinary records and the next fixtures which will follow the international break.
