Ward shown the door at Molineux

After leaving Bristol City Ward joined Wolves as assistant to Colin Lee and when Lee left he was favourite to take over. But after a short spell as caretaker boss he stood aside and reverted to assistant manager as they appointed Dave Jones. Ward’s last game in charge was ironically the 2-1 win at the Turf on New Year’s Day 2001.

For the next season and a half he continued in the role as the Wolves team improved after considerable investment culminating in their play off semi-final defeat at the hands of Norwich.

Last season, despite continuing with the title of assistant manager, he found himself demoted and in effect despite the job title became reserve team coach swapping roles with Terry Connor who assumed coaching responsibilities with the first team.

Now though Jones has decided on a clean break and Ward has left with a replacement expected to be announced soon.

He was only at Burnley for a few short months as Adrian Heath’s number two. He arrived on the first day of pre-season training in 1996 but with eight games of the season left he departed to take the manager’s job at Bristol City.

He took them to the play offs as Burnley collapsed without him, the fans coming to the conclusion that it was him and not Heath who had turned things round. He has remained popular with the Burnley crowd since and always receives a good reception on the Turf.

But he is out of work again following this week’s news from Molineux.
