Walton in charge

We can hardly expect to have a card free match, that is something rare for the Winwick based Walton and it is as far back as April 2001 since he kept his cards in his pocket for an entire match.

This season he has issued 95 yellow and 7 red cards in 35 matches. We need to be somewhat cautious as home teams are not quite so hard done to by this referee. Just 37 of the yellow cards have gone to home team players with the other 58 to away team players whilst the red cards are even worse at 1-6.

Having said that it is the home team that has suffered when he has previously refereed Burnley. This will be only his third Burnley game but the red card has been shown in the first two.

He was the referee when we lost at home to Luton in the 1998/99 season. Neil Moore was harshly sent off for two yellow cards with Graham Branch, Steve Davis and Micky Mellon also getting yellow cards along with one Luton player.

Last season he was the referee as we waved goodbye to the Unprofessionals and sent off their player Jon Daly. Ian Moore and Mitchell Thomas (making a long awaited return from injury) were both booked.

He is currently enjoying his longest run without a red card for three years, a total of eight matches. The last player he sent off was Lee Cook playing for QPR in a 1-0 win at Plymouth.

There is one thing for certain though, he will be better than the referee we had in this fixture last season, that was Paul Alcock.
