Walton back with Clarets

Last updated : 22 April 2005 By Tony Scholes

Walton, from Winwick, has refereed just three Burnley games in the past and has sent off a player in all three and all three have been home players.

In 1998/99 he sent off Neil Moore in a 2-1 home defeat against Luton as we were fighting against the drop but in the last two seasons he has dismissed Stockport’s Jon Daly for an assault on Mitchell Thomas and Walsall keeper James Walker after awarding us a very debateable penalty at the Bescot.

This season as been a quiet one for him and he has handed out just 62 yellow and 4 red cards in 29 fixtures and that includes 8 yellow cards in one game between Preston and Stoke.

We can be thankful that yellow cards have now become meaningless in terms of suspensions because only 19 of those 62 have gone to home team players with the other 43 to away team players.

His red cards, three of them in successive fixtures in March, have been evenly distributed. Rotherham keeper Mike Pollitt will be well aware of him, he sent him off at Palace earlier in the season.

Incredibly this will be the fourth Rotherham league game he has refereed this season having previously taken charge of their home draw with Cardiff along with a draw at Palace and a defeat at Millwall.

Tomorrow he will be assisted by Russell Booth (Notts) and Gary Brittain (South Yorks).
