Walking On Thin Ice

However, the longer terms effects of the ongoing ‘Walk Up For Burnley’ campaign are now beginning to be felt across the town. The magnificent efforts of supporters have not gone unnoticed, and we now seem to have incurred the wrath of transport executives in the area.

It appears that too many Clarets fans have been taking literally Dave Edmundsons’s advice to walk up to Turf Moor on matchdays. This has resulted in claims that there has been a significant impact on the number of people taking public transport and taxis in and around the town.

The area’s main bus operator, Burnley and Pendle Transport, has hit out at the ongoing initiative in a recent newsletter, stating that they had experienced a noticeable reduction in passenger numbers, in particular on Saturdays. They are also claiming that they may have to cut back some routes if current trends are maintained.

Burnley’s taxi operators have also cited the reluctance of football fans to use their services for reductions they have experienced in their takings for the first quarter of 2004.

A spokesman for the club, who wished to remain nameless, said that it was very positive that so many fans were taking their advice. However, they were keen to stress that they were also happy for fans to use whatever means of transport necessary to get to the ground.

In the meantime, everyone at Clarets Mad hope that supporters will continue to ‘Walk up For Burnley’ for the remaining home fixtures this season, regardless of the impending effect that their actions might be having.
