Vintage Clarets squad named for Sunday

Last updated : 12 May 2014 By Tony Scholes

We've been patiently awaiting news of the Vintage Clarets squad for this game and it was confirmed over the weekend with no fewer than eight players named who have won promotions with the Clarets.

Big Vince Overson was in the team that won the third division under the captaincy of Martin Dobson in 1982, and not quite so big these days, will feature alongside five of Jimmy Mullen's fourth division winners of ten years later, namely John Deary, who will captain the side, Roger Eli, Andy Farrell, David Hamilton and Graham Lancashire.

They'll be joined by David Eyres, who played alongside Deary and Farrell at Wembley two years later, and Paul Weller who was a member of Stan Ternent's 2000 promotion team, coming back from illness in time to score a crucial goal at Oxford.

The Vintage Clarets squad is: Richard Lee, Chris Scott, Graham Lancashire, Paul Atkinson, Andy Farrell, John Deary, David Eyres, Paul Weller, Roger Eli, Peter Mumby, George Oghani, Liam Robinson, David Hamilton, Vince Overson, Lee Cartwright, Paul Scott.

The game is being played in memory of former local sportsman and big Burnley fan Tony Nuttall, known as NUTZ to us here on Clarets Mad, who passed away in June of last year after a battle with cancer.

The proceeds from the day are all going to MacMillan Cancer Support, a charity supported by NUTZ's family.

We'd love to see you at the game. The more we get into the Arbories the better day it will be. There is no charge for admission but there will be a collection at the gate.

Alternatively, we are raising funds ahead of the game and Mark Smith, one of the Clarets Mad players, has set up a justgiving page to which you can DONATE

Kick off time at Padiham is 2 p.m. - Clarets Mad look forward to seeing you there as we take on some our old heroes to whom we are very grateful for agreeing to play in this game.

Bring your cameras and autograph books, and if you ask nicely the Clarets Mad players might sign too!
