Two special Turf Moor guests

Last updated : 19 March 2004 By Tony Scholes

Memorable might not be the right word, significant definitely is because our guests tomorrow are the two players who scored the most important Burnley goals ever scored – Neil Grewcock and Ian Britton.

I watched the recently released Orient video whilst travelling to Nottingham on Wednesday and it is still so difficult to watch. The tension still gets to you with each kick and the relief and you still sit there screaming for George Courtney to blow the final whistle. Somehow there is still this fear that it might all go wrong.

Neil and Ian played in the worst of all Burnley sides but in fairness to them they would have been comfortable in far better sides over the years, Britton in particular had played at the top level.

Both of them will forever be heroes to Burnley supporters though after that day almost seventeen years ago and there is no doubt that they will, and quite rightly, receive a wonderful reception again from the Turf Moor crowd.

How did Neil Grewcock manage to find the corner of the net with that effort just before half time and how did Ian Britton, the smallest player on the pitch, get his head to the ball to score the second just after half time?

How the did it hardly matters, just the fact that they did and we lived to fight another day.

It is a very special welcome back to the Turf to both of them.
