Yates and assistant Neil Howarth, another ex-Claret, signed new one year deals just over a week ago but last Tuesday had to inform a number of players that they would not be kept on because of the increasing need to reduce the wage bill.

Two of those players were former loan players at Turf Moor in Craig Armstrong, who joined us from Nottingham Forest in the 1994/95 season and Keith Lowe who was with us on loan from Wolves in the first half of the 2005/06 season.

Armstrong had been there only since January and had played just seven league games whereas Lowe had spent the full season at Aggborough and had started all but four of their league games.

Yates said: "The club have had to take one or two decisions with its longer term future in mind and in that respect some have been taken out of my hands, but these are tough times for a lot of clubs at both this level and above.

"There are a number of clubs going out of business and we're in a position where things aren't as rosy as we'd like them to be and we were not able to offer deals to a few of the boys that I would have perhaps liked to have done. I could have done, but it would have been on far reduced terms and I didn't think that was appropriate."

"The boys that are leaving aren't so much being released, they're being sent on their way with our absolute best wishes to hopefully further their careers, and our thanks for all their efforts."
