Tudgay stays with Wednesday

Not long ago the former Derby forward was stamping his feet demanding the opportunity to speak to Burnley over a move to the Premier League, certainly he was according to his agent Darryl Powell, the former Wednesday player.

He was reneging on a promise to sign a new three year deal at Hillsborough with Powell suggesting there was no way he would sign it now and he wanted an opportunity to play Premier League football.

Wednesday had plenty to say of course with manager Brian Laws following his chairman Lee Strafford in condemning Burnley but it looked as though they now had an unhappy player on their books who wanted away. And with just one year remaining on his contract they stood the risk of losing him for nothing.

But a few days ago there were strong suggestions he was going to stay put, so what was it that persuaded him to do just that? An improved offer from Wednesday with a fourth year certainly helped, not as though I would suggest he'd have done anything just for the money of course.

Tudgay said on signing this new, improved offer: "I'm very happy because there was a lot of speculation going on but I put pen to paper this morning. It's a long term contract but I'm not looking to coast through it, I want to get into the Premiership and I want to do it with Sheffield Wednesday.

"Hearing that a Premier League club are interested in you is flattering but after talking to the manager and chairman, it's won me over and now I just want to play football. I'm looking forward to the new season and want to beat last year's goal tally and help the team push towards the play-offs."

So Marcus Tudgay won't be coming to Burnley and the reaction from fans has certainly not been one of disappointment.
