Trotman joins Saints

Trotman's apprenticeship came to an end at Burnley in 2005 and a year later he joined Oldham where he broke into the first team. That led to a £500,000 transfer to Preston in January 2008 but he's struggled, partly through injury, to break into the side.

He had a short loan spell last season with Colchester but has now moved to Southampton for the first half of the 2009/10 season and goes straight into their squad for their home game against Brentford tomorrow.

Trotman is delighted to get the opportunity and said on completing the move: "I'm very grateful to Southampton for bringing me here. I just need to get games and Southampton is a great club for me to improve as well.

"My agent has been speaking to the gaffer for a while now and when I found out such a great club were interested I just had to come. The players here and the emphasis on development is a big draw for me."

When asked about his style he added: "You could say that I'm just an old fashioned defender, just head and kick it. You won't see me dribbling the ball or anything. I just try and keep it simple and my main priority is just to defend. That's my game and the manager knows what to expect."
