Transfer news and the Clarets join in this week

Matt Piper brought Leicester some money from his move to Sunderland
This week they have raked in another £3.5 million with the sale of Matt Piper to Sunderland after the young winger was given the option of a move to the North East or to the South coast with Southampton. Besides that Leicester have also reduced their squad with the free transfer of Geraint Frowen to Swansea and Simon Royce moving to QPR on loan.

They might though have to welcome back Denis Wise after being ordered to re-instate him after sacking him for gross misconduct when he thought it acceptable to injure team-mate Callum Davidson over a dispute. The Football League disciplinary panel have issued the order and this is the first decision the new panel have ever had to make. It beggars belief and smacks of even more incompetence at the Football League.

Grimsby have picked up another two players. Robert Taylor (and don’t we remember him from Gillingham?) has signed on a free from Wolves whilst Steven Kappa has moved from Crystal Palace to Blundell Park in a loan deal. Palace themselves have strengthened their squad with the free transfer signing of Birmingham striker and former Burnley target Dele Adebola.

Needless to say Portsmouth have been involved again this week and have signed Middlesbrough’s Gianluca Festa on loan with a permanent deal set to be struck soon. One of Harry Redknapp’s first signings was Eddie Howe but this week he has released Howe’s half brother Steve Lovell who has joined Dundee.

Coventry have also increased the size of their squad with two free signings. Fabien Debec has arrived from Rennes and former Leicester captain Steve Walsh has signed from Tamworth. Down at Brighton Martin Hinshelwood has secured the signing of Paul Kitson on a free transfer, his previous club was West Ham and Bradford City have taken Sunderland’s Michael Proctor on loan.

Burnley joined in this week with Lenny Johnrose returning to the club on a short term deal whilst one of Sheffield Wednesday’s supposed potential stars of the future, Owen Morrison, has found himself going out on loan to Hull City.

Finally Wolves have made probably the cheapest signing of the week with the acquisition of Marc Edworthy, released by Coventry City. Edworthy has joined Wolves for expenses only, what a contrast to some of the obscene wages there are in the game today.

There is just a week to go now to the closing of the transfer market although that may or may not apply to Football League clubs. Nobody seems to know as yet but there will certainly be no Matt Piper style sales to the Premiership after next Saturday. We shall just have to wait and see whether anyone ever bothers to work something out for the Football League.
