Tomlin at Carrow Road

Tomlin is in his fourth season as a Football League referee and has just twice previously been at a Burnley game with both of them away from home and both ending in draws.

In our 1999/2000 promotion season he was the referee at Millwall where an Andy Cooke goal put us in front in a game that ended 1-1. He handed out five yellow cards that day with two going to Millwall players and the other three handed out to Paul Cook, Glen Little and Dean West.

Last season it was the away game at Portsmouth and again it ended 1-1 with us having taken the lead, this time through David Johnson and Portsmouth equalising with a goal from Svetoslav Todorov after an error by Nik Michopoulos. It was a quiet afternoon for the referee though and there wasn’t a single card.

This season he is averaging just over three yellow cards per game and in 30 games there have been 96 yellow and 6 red cards. There is no doubt that Tomlin favours the home teams when it comes to cards, just 40 of the yellow cards have been given to home players with 66 to away players and all but one of the red cards have gone to home players.

One of those red cards came on a previous visit to Carrow Road when Norwich beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0. On that occasion he sent off Wednesday’s Shefki Kuqi in the incident that brought about Norwich’s opening goal from the penalty spot.

Everything points to a 1-1 draw given his previous Burnley matches but it is the Clarets who will have to tread more carefully if and when the cards come out.
