He was released by Oxford United at the end of last season and signed for Dr. Martens club Chelmsford City whose nickname is the Clarets. He has done well too at the lower level and has scored 11 goals in 27 league and cup appearances for them.

The excellent form of the 34 year-old Northern Ireland striker has prompted Stevenage, currently next to bottom in the Conference, to take him on a month’s loan and he joined the Broadhall Way club at the end of last week.

He joined on the same day as former Wigan and Cambridge midfielder Neil Mustoe who signed from Gloucester City and the signings gave Stevenage a boost as they beat Nuneaton Borough 3-1.

Neither of the new signings made the starting line up although both were used as late substitutes, Gray coming in first with just five minutes to go.
