Thompson, Burnley's last permanent signing just before the end of the summer transfer window, came on as a substitute just a few minutes past the hour with the Clarets trailing. He slid in the equaliser with his left foot from a Martin Paterson header and then won it deep into stoppage time as he got his right foot onto a low cross from Kevin McDonald.

Those goals have earned him a place in this week's team alongside the other player to net twice last weekend, Southampton's former Burnley target Marek Saganowski. The team is made up of players from ten different clubs with only Birmingham having two players nominated.

The full team this week is: Maik Taylor (Birmingham), Lewis Buxton (Sheffield Wednesday), Pim Balkestein (Ipswich), Matthew Kilgallon (Sheffield United), Damien Delaney (QPR), Hameur Bouazza (Birmingham), Michael Doyle (Coventry), Jordi Gomez (Swansea), Gary Teale (Derby), Marek Saganowski (Southampton), Steven Thompson (Burnley).
