Thomas to sign for Southampton

It has been well documented that Southampton are in desperate need of central defenders. They are club in some difficulties, and only this week manager George Burley admitted that he'd sold players during the summer just to prevent the club from going into administration.

They've got off to the worst of starts, losing 4-1 at home to Crystal Palace followed by a Carling Cup exit at the hands of Peterborough in front of the television cameras. It was thought they were looking at defenders from outside England but today they have moved to sign Thomas in a deal that nets Burnley £1.2 million.

Recently, when turning down an offer from Fulham for Kyle Lafferty, manager Steve Cotterill said that there could come a time when the club would seriously have to accept an offer should it reach a certain figure.

It looks as though the figure has been reached with Thomas. He's into the last season of his contract after what at times has been a difficult period for him at Turf Moor, but at the end of last season he was in excellent form alongside Steven Caldwell at the back, and again last Saturday, in what proved to be his last game in Burnley colours, he turned in an excellent performance.

Probably, given what's happened in the last two years, he'd decided he wouldn't consider a new deal at Burnley, and if that's the case then this deal without doubt represents good business for the Clarets.
