Thomas joins Clarets

His name has been linked with Burnley for some weeks but there was stiff competition for Steve Cotterill. Apart from Stoke wanting to keep him at the Britannia Stadium he was also linked with relegated Norwich City and play off losers Derby County and Ipswich Town.

Norwich had looked favourites a week ago but Derby for one were still hopeful and this morning expressed their disappointment with the news that he was joining Burnley.

The Gloucester born Thomas, who can play both at right back and in the centre of defence, started his career with Torquay United but moved to Stoke in the summer of 2000 for a £200,000 fee.

He’s played well over 200 games for Stoke and was part of a defence that conceded less goals than ours last season and the Stoke fans have already been expressing their disappointment at the move.

For the Clarets though, the signing of the 26 year old defender is good news and manager Steve Cotterill who flew out to America to conclude the deal said: “I’m delighted to capture a player of the stature of Wayne Thomas. I think, quite arguably, he is one of the best Bosman signings available this summer.

“He is a player I have liked for a long time now and I’ve had the pleasure of working with him before so I am well aware of what he brings to the team. He has good pace, he’s strong, has good aerial ability and a good temperament. He’s proved what a good player he is at this level for a number of seasons.

“In my opinion, he could go on to play in the Premiership if he continues to work hard at his game. We’ve put in some hard work over the last few weeks in trying to sign Wayne which has been worthwhile and I welcome him warmly to Burnley.”

A warm welcome then to our third summer signing – Wayne Thomas. We hope he has a long and successful career at the Turf.
