They went to the Palace and shook hands with the King

The cutting of the ribbon came after short speeches from club director, and former chairman, Barry Kilby and the club's historian Ray Simpson and was in the presence of some distinguished guests, none more so than descendents of two of those players who brought glory to our club a century ago.

The first item on view is the shirt that the current team will be wearing for the home game against Ipswich which will bring the curtain down on the home league programme this season but the exhibition features many artifacts and memorabilia that relate to our historic cup win, the first ever to be played in front of a reigning monarch.

That includes the shirt worn by goalscorer Bert Freeman, recently bought by co-chairman Mike Garlick. It's one of two shirts worn in the final that's on display, the other being the Eddie Mosscrop's.

The medals won by those two players are on display as is Tom Bamford's, and these medals are very unique in that they were wrongly inscribed 'English Cup' rather than 'FA Cup'.

There is much more to see; various publications and documents, supplemented with some of what have now become iconic photographs of the day including the players returning outside Rosegrove station.

You can see a signed menu card for the celebration dinner hosted by the MP Philip Morrell and his wife Lady Ottoline Morrell, a replica of the FA Cup, and it is all beautifully presented in the Long Gallery, a perfect setting.

The exhibition will be open throughout April, at least, and admission is free to Burnley residents and season ticket holders. Anyone under-16 or students, with proof, will also be admitted free of charge.

Below are some photographs showing some of the items on display and my thanks to Mike Smith (whose book The Road to Glory is available to purchase at the exhibition) for some of those shown.

One unique photograph shows Bert Freeman alongside our only other FA Cup final goalscorer Jimmy Robson whose goal came against Spurs in 1962.
