The week's transfers

Lee Marshall - his move to West Brom helped Leicester's finances
No First Division club has spent any money in transfer fees although one, Leicester City, did collect some money for the sale of Lee Marshall to West Brom for £700,000. The former Norwich defender played in Leicester’s opening game of the season at home to Watford but yesterday found himself at Old Trafford coming on as a sub.

Leicester have also let goalkeeper Tim Flowers go out on loan with Premiership new boys KKMC taking him for a month because of a goalkeeping crisis at Maine Road.

There have been one or two other loan deals and one went through before last week’s matches but too late to catch our transfer review. That move saw Derby striker Deon Burton join Portsmouth and he has already responded with two goals.

Other loan deals have seen young Celtic player John-Paul McGovern sign for Sheffield United and Watford for the second successive season have taken Manchester United’s Danny Webber whilst Millwall’s Leke Odunsi has dropped down a division with a temporary move to Colchester.

The rest are free transfers or players released at the end of last season getting contracts. This includes former Burnley loan keeper Gavin Ward who has signed a five month contract with Walsall whilst Franchise FC goalkeeper Ian Feuer has signed for Tranmere.

Gavin Ward - signed a short term deal with Walsall
Former Manchester United and Palace striker Jovan Kirovski is on the move, the American has signed for Birmingham where Steve Bruce is incredibly still manager.

A Burnley target of Adrian Heath’s from 1996 was Sheffield United full-back Lee Sandford. He left Bramall Lane at the end of last season and has signed for Oxford United and also dropping into the 4th Division is another former target Lee Sharpe. He has signed for spoon-bending Exeter City having collected his 10p in the pound at Bradford City.

That just leaves three other players who have left First Division clubs on free transfers. Phil Hadland of Brighton has signed for Darlington, Reading’s Neil Smith has moved to Stevenage and Southport have signed Neil Gibson from Sheffield Wednesday.

With the First Division clubs expected to pick up a massive £50,000 each from a television deal with Carlton and Granada don’t expect the transfer market to pick up too much and with the possibility of the transfer window still effecting the Nationwide League we could only have two weeks left before the block goes on any moves.
