The wait is almost over

The club have finally made their decision and it will come as no surprise if it is former Cheltenham and Stoke manager Steve Cotterill who is introduced to the waiting press tomorrow.

Over the last few days he has been the only name apparently in the frame and it is thought that he arrived in town today for final talks with the club before agreeing to the deal.

The 39 year-old Cheltenham born Cotterill started his playing career in the non league with his home town club but he suffered a number of injuries before moving on to Alvechurch and then Burton Albion.

From there he joined the Crazy Gang at Wimbledon and went on to play in the Premiership for them. After a loan spell at Brighton he moved down the south coast and signed for Bournemouth when he played against the Clarets. His playing career came to an end with Hereford United in the Conference.

His first managerial role was in Ireland with Sligo Rovers, and he took them to their highest ever finish as well as into Europe, but he returned home to Cheltenham in December 1996 as a player with former Burnley boss Jimmy Mullen taking over at Sligo.

Two months later and he was appointed caretaker manager at Cheltenham and was given the job on a full time basis after winning the Doctor Marten’s League and with it promotion to the Conference.

The next two seasons saw them finish 2nd and then 1st in the Conference and that championship brought with it a place in the Football League for the first time in the club’s history.

It didn’t stop there and three years later he guided them into the 2nd Division in a season that saw them go on their best ever FA Cup run which included a win against the Clarets.

He moved on to Stoke and was just settling in when he made the surprise move of going to Sunderland as assistant to Howard Wilkinson. Hindsight is wonderful and I am sure he still regrets that.

They failed to turn things round at the Stadium of Light and they were both sacked. This season he has worked at Leicester but left a couple of weeks ago because he was keen to get into management.

It looks as thought that opportunity has now arrived and he is set to replace Stan Ternent as Burnley manager. We’ll know by 10:00 a.m. tomorrow but it would now be a massive surprise if anyone else was unveiled.
