The Lord days were over

Burnley were eighteenth in the old Third Division after a start that had seen us record no fewer than six defeats in the first eight league games. We were now on a run of twelve league and cup games and were heading for the title and promotion at the end of the season.

At the time Elton John was in charge of Watford with Graham Taylor as manager and they were third in the division above. They too would win promotion that season and would play in the top division for the first time in their history.

The occasion was the Football League Group Cup, a game Burnley won 2-1 with goals from Derek Scott and David Holt, but the big and hardly unexpected news had come earlier in the day. Around lunchtime, the club flag, already flying on match day, was lowered to half mast to announce the death of former Chairman Bob Lord.

Love him, loathe him, you could hardly be indifferent about him, but there was no doubt that after forty years Burnley Football Club was never going to be the same again.
