The Kettle's on at Donny

He didn't have the best of games that day, and you'll find him close to the bottom of our Rate the Ref table. He would have been even lower had the feature been in place a season earlier when he had an absolute nightmare in the televised game against RK Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. That night, apart from awarding penalties that weren't, he got far too many decisions wrong.

Air traffic controller Kettle has been on the Football League list since 2003 and has had something of a reputation for over use of his red and yellow cards. He's consistently gone past 140 yellow cards in a season and in 2007/08 there were 145 yellow and 6 red cards in just 38 matches.

However, this season he's averaging nothing like that. In seventeen games so far he's dished out just forty yellow cards and a couple of reds. The two players he's sent off are Lubomir Michalik of League One Leeds in their 5-2 home win over Crewe and a somewhat dubious dismissal of Southend's Dan Harding in a 1-1 draw with Stockport at Roots Hall.

Those yellow cards have been evenly matched up with twenty to home players and twenty to away players.

Trevor Kettle is a referee who worries me. He doesn't get around the pitch too well and always seems to be making too many decisions from too far away, and that leads to more incorrect decisions. I just hope he continues to keep his cards in his pocket as much as possible.

He will be assisted by Duncan Street (West Yorkshire) and Paul Thompson (Derbyshire) with fourth official duties in the hands of Wayne Grunnill (East Yorkshire).
