The incompetence of referees needs to improve

Last updated : 08 April 2005 By Tony Scholes

For the second time this season Olivier will take charge of a Burnley match and ironically it was back at Vicarage Road we last saw him when we collected our first win of the season.

There was nothing to question him on and he also had a good game when we went to Forest back in March last year and earned a point. He was strong enough to put a stop to Forest’s tactics that night including the disallowing of Johnson’s goal.

He’ll be easily noticeable tomorrow on the pitch, apart from wearing a different colour there will certainly not be anyone smaller.

Olivier is not one to rush for his cards but he does sometimes have the tendency to nit pick and doesn’t let the players get on with playing and that’s something we have seen more than once in the past from him.

This season in 28 games he has handed out a total of 74 yellow and 5 red cards. He has a reputation for being something of a homer but in recent weeks he looks as though he’s been trying to balance that up with his cards.

Even so there are still just 29 of those yellow cards gone the way of home players with the other 45 handed out to away players.

We’ll have no problems should we get the 2004/05 Watford version of Olivier but things will be wholly different if we get the version from two years earlier.

He will be assisted at the Priestfield Stadium by Martin Darlow (Bedfordshire) and Glenn Hambling (Norfolk).
