The Imposter to leave Preston

Last updated : 19 September 2002 By Tony Scholes

A statement was issued today by Preston to reveal that Chief Executive Tony Scholes would be leaving the club following the AGM on 14th October.

He has been at Deepdale for six years and was initially the Financial Director before taking over from Peter Church as Chief Exec. It was at this time his name came to prominence and it provided me with one or two awkward moments as Burnley fans assumed I had jumped ship and moved a few miles west.

Many of them may well have been unaware that I am not particularly equipped to carry out that sort of role at a Football Club but they should have all known that as a Claret of many years I could never work for Preston North End. Let’s face it I’m Clarets Mad and wouldn’t consider another club.

The second Tony Scholes though has risen within football, I can assure you he is highly thought of at the Football League, and recently became a member of the Football League board.

The one advantage for me in him being at Deepdale is that it does get me into places I wouldn’t normally expect to find myself. A recent phone call to the FA took me a lot further than I could have expected after announcing that I was Tony Scholes. So I should be thankful to him for that.

Preston have confirmed that his departure has nothing to do with the recent cut backs and redundancies and is a personal decision.

So it’s goodbye to Tony Scholes from Tony Scholes.
