The Doc is back

Mick Docherty
It is only right that Docherty should be back on the Turf Moor pitch this year, the 40th anniversary of him captaining the side that won the FA Youth Cup. It was the only time it has been won by the Clarets.

He soon broke into the first team and was soon a regular in the side. Only a serious injury cost him his place but he was released as we were relegated from the First Division at the end of the 1975/76 season.

He's been back to Burnley twice since. He returned in 1989 as assistant to manager Frank Casper but his stay was only just over a year. He left to join Stan Ternent as his assistant at Hull with Jimmy Mullen replacing him at Burnley.

He was back again in 1998, this time as Ternent's reserve team coach. He eventually became the first team coach and remained at Burnley until the end of the 2003/04 season, leaving along with Ternent, Sam Ellis and Ronnie Jepson. He worked alongside Jepson until earlier this season at Gillingham but is currently out of the game.

Besides playing in that Youth Cup winning team he made over 170 appearances for the Clarets.
