The Card Man of English Football

Last updated : 08 February 2014 By Tony Scholes

Hampshire referee Stroud leads the way this season on cards. In 25 games he's clocked up 113 yellows and seven reds, and he is, for now, the only referee to have reached three figures in yellow cards.

In a couple of games this season there have only been two cards and you have to go back to Boxing Day 2011, and a League Two game between Dagenham & Redbridge and Barnet, for a game he refereed when there were no cards. There have only been four such games since he became a league referee in 2004.

Of his yellow cards this season there have been 50 for home players and 63 for away players and the red cards have gone three for home players and four for away players with one of the home players being Millwall's Shane Lowry, sent off in their 5-1 home defeat against Derby in September.

There was a red card last time he refereed Burnley. That was back in October 2010 when he dismissed Clarke Carlisle in the seventh minute of our away game against today's opponents Millwall on a day when he missed the incident involving Steve Morison that led to Andre Bikey being substituted shortly afterwards. Burnley appealed the red card. We lost the appeal and Carlisle had to serve a three match ban.

Carlisle isn't the only Burnley player he's sent off; Steven Caldwell also received his red card on the night we won on penalties at Chelsea. That was during a period when he'd been promoted to the select group, but it didn't last long and soon after, in December 2008, he refereed his last game in he Premier League.

That's two red cards in four Burnley games, all of which have been away which means today is his first Turf Moor game. Three of those games have come since the introduction of RATE THE REF and despite the cards he's currently in 30th place with a rating of 66.37 out of 100.

So maybe we can expect a decent performance today but we can certainly expect some cards .

The assistant referees are: Robert Jones (Merseyside) and Neil Sharp (Cleveland). The fourth official is Football League referee Scott Duncan (Northumberland) who refereed Burnley for the first time this season when we played our first ever league game against Yeovil at Turf Moor.
