The A Team referee to take charge of Hull game

Last updated : 07 November 2014 By Tony Scholes

I'd love to have turned this into an Ed Sheeran style article but I'm not sure whether Clattenburg has white lips or a pale face or whether he is breathing in snowflakes, so we'll take a look at his previous Burnley games, the last of which was our Boxing Day defeat at Middlesbrough last season.

In truth I can find very little evidence to criticise him which is why you can find him in third place in the RATE THE REF Table, and this despite having won only one of his seven qualifying games which was the Carling Cup win against Bolton in 2010.

He's a long standing referee at the top level now. He joined the Football League in 2000, refereeing a game between Chesterfield and York to kick off his first season, and by 2004 he'd been promoted to the Premier League with his first game being Everton's 3-1 win at Crystal Palace in August 2004 during which he sent off Everton's Gary Naysmith.

Now aged 39, the Gosforth based Clattenburg is one of our most experienced referees but he still has his concerning moments, none more so this season than the awarding of an outrageous penalty for Leicester against Manchester United that totally changed the game.

This season started for him with the UEFA Super Cup Final at Cardiff, won by Real Madrid, and since he's refereed nine games domestically. Seven of them have been in the Premier League, one in the Championship and one in the Capital One Cup.

In those games he's yellow carded 33 players and sent off Tyler Blackett in that Leicester v Manchester United game referred to. Of those 33 cards, 15 have gone to home team players and 18 to away team players.

I don't mind Clattenburg, although he does, at times, appear to play to the cameras. I think I can say with some confidence that he'll arrive and depart Turf Moor tomorrow with his team (not The A Team) and he won't be speaking to Sean Dyche on the phone about the game.

His team are made up of assistant referees Simon Beck (Bedfordshire) and Jake Collin (Merseyside) with fourth official is Andre Marriner (West Midlands) who refereed our last home game against Everton.
