Taylor gets Deepdale clash

Last updated : 16 January 2009 By Tony Scholes
I have to admit to being surprised he is still refereeing. When he refereed our away game at Southampton last April I expected that to be his last Burnley game given that he celebrated his 49th birthday last June.

But he's still on the list, and now in his 19th season as a Football League referee. He's still a very busy referee when it comes to red and yellow cards and despite him refereeing two away games wins for the Clarets last season he occupies a very lowly position in our Rate the Ref feature.

This season, in just 17 games, he's handed out no fewer than 67 yellow cards and added to that with six red cards. Of those yellow cards 34 of them have gone to home team players and 33 to away team players.

It might be his first Burnley game of the season, but this will be his third Preston game in 2008/09. He refereed their 2-1 win at Ipswich on the opening day of the season and was also the man in charge when they drew 2-2 at Norwich in November, a game that saw Norwich's Darel Russell sent off.

I'd be very surprised if tomorrow's games is a quiet one in terms of cards, they very rarely are with Paul Taylor.

He will be assisted by Dave McCallum (Tyne & Wear) and David Unsworth (Greater Manchester) whilst the fourth official duties will be in the hands of Football League referee Karl Evans (Greater Manchester).Yorkshire).
