Tanner's the man for Derby game

Last updated : 28 November 2008 By Tony Scholes
Shoebridge, Deadman, Bennett and most recently Miller have all been targeted by manager Owen Coyle after decisions that have ranged from puzzling to downright bad.

However, there will be no sign of any of those four referees tomorrow when we play Derby tomorrow, although there will be one old Turf Moor favourite on the touchline.

The referee is Steve Tanner from Somerset, a referee who in the last three years has enjoyed presiding over Burnley wins on television. He was referee for both our wins against Wolves at Molineux in 2005/06 and 2007/08 seasons whilst he also refereed the 3-2 home win against Preston in 2006/07.

This will be his sixth Burnley game. He had a nightmare of a performance at Coventry in his first Burnley game but in the four since I feel only in the defeat at Leeds in April 2007 did he have a disappointing game.

This season he's refereed eleven games and he's shown 31 yellow cards and just one red card in those games. The red card was Ipswich's Alex Bruce as they lost at home 2-0 to Wolves. Meanwhile that yellow card count is 12 to home players and 19 to away players.

Tanner is a much improved referee and has now been officiating at the top level for almost two years since his first Premier League game in December 2006. He rates former referee Paul Durkin as the best because he both commanded and showed respect, not as though he was suggesting other referees don't of course.

He will be assisted by Mick McDonough (Tyne & Wear) and Trevor Massey (Cheshire) whilst Whitley Bay referee Graham Laws will be handling the electronic board on the touchline and trying to keep the two managers in order.
