Taffy v Lily

Last updated : 09 March 2006 By Tony Scholes

Over 35 years I’ve known him, he’s never changed, some would call him arrogant, some would say over confident and the odd one might suggest he is downright rude. I’ve always got on well with him and would suggest that he is nothing more than sure of his own mind and very opinionated.

I used to enjoy calling in his shop in my smoking days to pick up my cigarettes and have a discussion on football – but if it ever got into any sort of argument I lost, so when Lily Savage took him on this week on Welsh radio, the Blackburn midfielder and apparently retired international never stood a chance.

I have to say I started listening from a somewhat biased standpoint, after all Taffy was and, for me, always will be a Claret whilst Lily is objectionable and plays his football in one of those somewhat strange looking halved shirts.

It started off with our man suggesting that he didn’t think Lily was good enough to play for Wales and that was followed with an accusation that Taffy had a hidden agenda regarding his exclusion from the Welsh squad. “Hang on a minute son,” Taffy replied. “You were left out of one squad and you threw your toys out of your pram”.

That was because, having been left out, Savage announced his retirement from international football, only to change his mind some time later. He says he has apologised but not to Toshack because he cannot get hold of him.

“How can a modern day manager not have a mobile phone,” the 31 year old midfielder said. “Why should he?” replied Taffy who then suggested that Savage should write to Toshack.

“I’ve spoken to just about everyone including the Welsh FA and Roy Evans but I’ve not had one word from John Toshack,” Lily claimed. “Have you written to him? Why don’t you drive down then? Do it. Do it.”

Savage was a beaten man now and decided to retaliate by criticising the former Burnley winger’s playing credentials. “You weren’t the greatest player in the world,” he said. “You wouldn’t go in for 50/50 tackles my father said. If you played against me today ……” And Taffy jumped in with, “You wouldn’t catch me.”

He’s not changed, he still wins his arguments and Lily is no nearer contacting John Toshack. Taffy 1 Lily 0.
