Swap round at the bottom

Last updated : 12 October 2010 By Tony Scholes

Leicester beat Scunthorpe to take themselves off the bottom, watched by the latest in a long line of managers that Milan Mandaric has employed in English football. Sven Goran Eriksson was there to watch before being confirmed as the new boss yesterday.

That left Bristol City down at the bottom. They suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Norwich who managed to find the net, including a penalty, something we just couldn't do a week earlier. Brizzle look to have a long hard winter in front of them.

Nothing much changed at the top and they do say all the luck goes with the top teams. QPR apparently were fortunate to be in front at Crystal Palace; that was until the home side equalised on 89 minutes. But when you are top things go for you and in stoppage time Julian Speroni, who had again been in inspired form, made his one mistake to allow Heidar Helguson to win it for the league leaders.

Right behind them are Cardiff and they won at Barnsley in a game that saw two former Clarets at odds over a penalty decision. Stephen Foster thought Pete Whittingham had held him, forcing him to handle the ball. Whittingham and Cardiff came out on top, sort of, they got a penalty but saw it saved.

Cardiff haven't a bad record at Oakwell apparently, despite losing there last season. Perhaps they'd give us some tips for Christmas.

The goal of the day was probably Jem Karacan's equaliser for Reading at Preston. The home side had gone in front, and this despite Jon Parkin turning slower than a double decker bus, but Karacan ensured the visitors got a point with a superb volley.

Burnley's draw at Millwall has seen us drop to sixth with Ipswich having replaced Reading in the play off positions.

It's time for the second break of the season now and the next fixtures in two weeks time are below this weekend's stats, the leading goalscorers and each club's disciplinary record.
