Swanny back as special guest

Swanny joined the Clarets six days after Stan sacked four players after the 1-0 home defeat against York at the beginning of the 1998/99 season. He arrived from Bury with Gordon Armstrong with the club short of players following the previous week’s revelations that four players would not play for the club again.

But Turf Moor was no new home for Swanny, he had only been gone a year after signing for the Clarets initially in the summer of 1995 as a replacement for Steve Davis who had moved to Luton.

He enjoyed a good first season under Jimmy Mullen but it was obvious that he would struggle to hold down a regular place in the side when Adrian Heath returned as Mullen’s replacement. And although he remained a Burnley player throughout Heath’s reign he was never a first choice although he did get more games because of injuries to the likes of Vince Overson.

For much of the close season in 1997 it was thought that he would sign for Bury and his old manager from Hull Stan Ternent and that’s what did happen as our new manager Chris Waddle brought in the likes of Steve Blatherwick and Lee Howey.

A year later and Stan arrived at Burnley and after claiming on a Radio Lancs forum that he was not going to sign Peter Swan he did just that. He returned to replace the likes of Blatherwick and Howey.

That was good news for the Burnley fans who had taken to him the first time round but a bad injury in his first season ultimately ended his Turf Moor career. During the following season he was allowed to move on to York but his stay was short and he retired from the game.

He’ll get a good reception from the Burnley fans who always appreciated his 100% commitment in both his spells at the club and it will be well deserved.
