Sturrock goes at Wednesday

The latest defeat sees Wednesday hovering just above the drop zone on goal difference and they have done what they continue to do and make a change and, excluding caretakers, Sturrock has been the seventh manager this side of the Millennium.

There was much speculation around the time of our visit to Hillsborough that all was not well between Sturrock and Chairman Dave Allen. That was over his new contract, but it was all resolved last month when the Scot, who took over at Wednesday from Chris Turner in September 2004, signed a new four year deal.

He must have thought that meant he was secure in his job, but just a few weeks later, and after their heaviest defeat of the season, the club have called time on his tenure. Allen said in a statement this afternoon: “Our league position says it all. Unfortunately, in spite of strengthening the squad this year, we have not made the desired progress and, to that end, we need a change in the coaching staff.”

Sheffield Wednesday have become the fifth Championship club since the start of the season to start the search for a new manager, and incredibly only nine clubs in our division still have the same manager with whom they ended last season.
