Stoke referee Bates at Forest

It is perhaps appropriate that having featured Steve Blatherwick in the Match Preview that Bates is the referee. He was refereeing for the first time at the Turf on the infamous day when Stan said that Blatherwick and three other players would never play for the club again.

On that day he gave a yellow card to Chris Scott in the first minute he was on the pitch and also yellow carded Neil Moore.

The season before he had taken charge of our away game at Bristol City (his only Burnley away game to date). All three yellow cards that night went to Burnley players as we lost the game 3-1 having led at half time. The players booked were Paul Barnes, Marlon Beresford and Chris Vinnicombe.

Last season he twice called off the Bradford City home game and then made sure he booked Gazza for his only foul when the match was eventually played, Gazza’s debut. Mitchell Thomas and Bradford’s Gunnar Halle were also booked.

He was back at the Turf at the beginning of this season and although all three yellow cards were given to Brighton players he controversially sent off Arthur Gnohere.

The only other player he has sent off this season is Grimsby’s Alan Pouton in a 3-0 defeat at Preston and there have been a total of 98 yellow cards in 36 games.

We will need to be careful though tomorrow because this referee is certainly keener to wave yellow cards at away team players. Of those 98 just 35 have gone to home team players and 63 to away team players.
