Stockport keeper Spencer in unlikely link

The player in question is Stockport’s twenty year-old keeper James Spencer who made his league debut for them against Watford over three years ago when he was still sixteen, becoming the clubs youngest ever goalkeeper.

We are supposedly one of a number of Championship clubs looking to sign him for a fee of around a quarter of a million pounds. I’m sure Steve Cotterill would love to have that sort of money to spend but if he had it probably would not be on a goalkeeper.

Danny Coyne, signed last summer, has another two years of his contract remaining whilst Brian Jensen has recently signed a new three year deal. With the transfer rules less strict with goalkeepers there is obviously no real need to bring in a third.

Stockport meanwhile are facing a race against time to meet this Friday’s due date for their Supporters Trust to take over the club. The whole deal is under collapse because Cheshire Sports, the current owners, have been unable to gain the required sanction on Edgeley Park from the club’s former Chairman Mr Brendan Hell-Wood of the Unprofessionals.

Without that the deal won’t go through. The Trust’s Norman Beverley said, “Everybody wants this deal to proceed – Stockport Council, Supporters Direct, Cheshire Sport, the Trust, the main sponsors and, most importantly, the fans.”

They are urging Hell-Wood to come forward with the deal right now in serious danger of collapsing.
