Stewart speaks on hunt for new players

It has been a week of offers for players being turned down, and very publicly being turned down. It started with Martin Paterson at Scunthorpe and was quickly followed by two young players in Scotland, Andrew Driver from Hearts and Dundee's Kevin McDonald.

Owen Coyle has previously said we'll explore all avenues for players and Stewart, standing in for the manager who is away on holiday, said: "We've spread our net far and wide. It's not just Europe we've been looking. We've been to other continents looking for players."

The most publicised of the offers has been Paterson's, and Burnley fans do know something about him having played against us, but Stewart said of the two Scottish based players: "Andrew Driver's been playing with Hearts for a couple of years now and has done very well. Kevin McDonald has also been in the Dundee first team for a number of years, even though he's very young.

"But it is not a case of getting as many players in as soon as possible," he said. "I think you've got to be choosey about the sort of players you get and you've got to pick them carefully. It is young, fresh players we definitely need."

Stewart ended by saying that he would prefer it if deals were done outside of the gaze of the media. "There has been interest in certain players," he said. "But unfortunately it got out through the teams we've approached. We'd rather keep things under wraps until such time as we've sealed a deal.

"We also don't want to lull our fans into a sense of false security because when they think a player's coming and you don't deliver they start asking questions."
