Stewart did not want to play for Burnley

Burnley had been chasing the Scottish international and it did look for a time that he might sign for us. In the end though he joined Forest with Burnley boss Stan Ternent incredibly blaming a supporters’ web site.

Ternent claimed that Sky were alerted by the web site claiming it was something only he and Sir Alex Ferguson knew about. There was no indication though as to how anyone else managed to find out to alert anyone.

In fact, even if they had, it would have made no difference and even before all this Stewart’s agent said that he had contacted a number of clubs. Even before the end of last season, even before this web site knew anything about Burnley’s interest, he announced, via Sky, that he was on the lookout for a club for his client to join on loan. Wright himself said that he had contacted a number of clubs.

Forest apparently were already in the picture although it was Sunderland and Rangers who were the names being mentioned publicly. There were even attempts last April to get Stewart abroad for a year with Royal Antwerp considered favourites.

Yesterday with the move to Forest almost wrapped up Wright insisted that the player had always intended to weigh up all his options before sealing any move.

"I don’t think anyone is to blame for the lad not going to Burnley," said Wright. "It wasn’t really a personal issue, he just felt Forest suited his style of play better."

Today though, having completed his move to Forest, Stewart said that Forest were always his first choice. He thanked Burnley for their interest but said that he never had any intention of swapping Old Trafford for Turf Moor.

We certainly share Stan’s frustration that he was unable to sign him, that goes without question. The last couple of days though have at least confirmed that none of our unofficial web sites could have been responsible for Stewart not becoming a Claret for a year.
