Steve Cotterill, more views - Updated 15:30

Last updated : 12 June 2004 By Tony Scholes

Following last Thursday's appointment we asked for your thoughts on the news and were able to publish many of them on the site.

More have come in and we are now publishing these below.

It is not too late - if you want to comment on the appointment of Steve Cotterill then you still can - just SEND them into us.

I would just like to say well done to Steve Cotterill for getting the job, and I hope he can get us up to the Premiership within the next couple of seasons.

I think we need a new goalkeeper even though Brian Jensen made some outstanding saves last season.

I am the only Burnley fan where I live and hope we get promoted so that all the Liverpool and Everton fans can stop giving me hassle.

Good luck Steve.

Bob Trowler, Ormskirk

I am a Sunderland fan and am very happy you have appointed Steve as your manager. He was not given a chance at Sunderland and I hope he can do well, good luck for next year.

ps. best away game of the season last year cheers!

Paul Revely

Welcome to Turf Moor Steve. I hope your time In charge is a successful one. I wish you all the best.

In my opinion your priority must be to correct our abysmal goals against record. Wimbledon being the exception, ours has been the worst in the First Division for two years running . I suggest that you start with a new goalkeeper. But that's your job not mine.

I am sure the Burnley fans will give you the chance to prove yourself,

Good Luck.

Brian Pickavance, Rochdale

I think Stan has done a job at Turf Moor despite the lack of cash around these days due to ITV Digital landing most clubs with very little money!

I wish Stan all the best for the future.....

Steve Cotterill will be in the same situation as Stan with very little cash, but I hope he knows of some good players who will come to Burnley and win us promotion to the PREMIERSHIP.

Watch this space Blackburn WHO?

Kevin Holroyd, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

Unlike most other contributors I didn't welcome Cotterills appointment - I think his credibility is limited after the Stoke and Sunderland era, and we should still look on him as a manager with potential and a lot to prove yet.

Having said that he is here now and we have to support him and the team. I really hope for all our sakes, (and for Barry Kilby's who I think is great for Burnley Football Club), that it works out.

I hope he can put together a good coaching team for all levels in the club and move things on - I think we'd got very stale in that aspect.

Phil Brown, Rossendale

First and Foremost welcome to Turf Moor Steve and your new backroom staff whoever they may prove to be.

Everyone has been harping on about Stan being a hard act to follow, Steve follow him and better him,you have the backing of the majority of the fans, you have the backing of a fantastic Chairman and you in your own right have maybe a point to prove in Division one.

I wont disguise the fact that we the fans have our own dreams about players we would like to see at the Turf but I do believe the first signings you make will be crucial to getting some of the stayaways back, give us fans something to get excited about its been a long past couple of seasons.

GOOD LUCK FROM A TRUE CLARET FAMILY..

Targe and Pearcey, currently exiled in Norfolk!!

Just want to welcome Steve Cotterill to Burnley Football Club. After reading what is quite an impressive CV I am sure and satisfied that this is the right appointment to lead the Clarets forward.

I am sure he will add depth, pride, passion and belief to the club. Hopefully he will add some good players, to the already depleted playing staff we have on our books. The way I see it is that it is onwards and upwards for the club.

So lets get behind him & the team and get Burnley back where it belongs..... in the Premiership.

Up the Clarets!!!!.

Anon

Firstly I would like to welcome Steve Cotterill to Burnley Football Club. He comes with lots of experience of dealing with very little money to sign players and a massive amount of potential to take the club forward.

He has good contacts in the game and that should see us attract some good quality players to fill the gaps that have been left by Glen Little and others.

Lets not forget Stan Ternent will go down in history at Turf Moor for being one of the best managers to have had the job of managing the Clarets, but times change and people move on, I believe that in Steve Cotterill we have the man who can take the club to the next level and the chairman & board have seen this potential and have worked magic to land this man.

Good luck to Burnley FC for the coming season and lets have a push for the play off's, also good luck to Stan Ternent in his future years in football.

Andy Edwards, Blackpool

I would first like to welcome the dawn of a NEW ERA, young blood that is what we have got in Steve Cotterill.

I just hope the fans all round the ground give him and the players the support they will need in the coming months, even when we don't play well in some of our first games lets give our new manager something to be proud of and that's the Clarets fans backing.

Good luck Steve I know it will be hard but we fans will try and back you all the way, along with the board.

Andrew Smith

I am pleased that Barry Kilby appointed a new manager. I, like lots of other Clarets, felt that Stan had done a good job for Burnley, but I also remember how I felt when we were top (Christmas) of the league.

I want to feel like that again, not despair when I see the league tables and worry that we could be playing teams like Oldham and Blackpool (no disrespect to them). We had the worst record in the league for goals against, was that the last two years?

I know all the arguments, no money, small squad, injuries etc. but some players came to us on loan and hardly played 90 minutes. Reasons? I don't know.

So I say give the manager a chance, give him our support, and our well known pride and loyalty (and money for new players) that will bring enthusiasm, perhaps youth and hopefully next season we can be where we should be, at the top and not at the bottom.

Shirley Morley, Rochdale

Steve Cotterill is a highly qualified coach and we all hope that he may do us some good whilst he is with us. Burnley is not in his blood and our better managers have had that.

The Board and the Chief Exec have chosen the 'Professional Manager' and some of us will have experience of those, as they practice their perceived skill (rarely more than one) on our organisations before career moves onwards and upwards, leaving us to clear up.

We must hope he is better than that but we should all recognise that he is passing through . Meanwhile can former Clarets get their coaching badges and some experience please as soon as possible.

Bob Nicholson

He seems a decent guy but only time will tell if he is a good replacement for Stan Ternent. I'm glad we didn't get McMahon or Ronnie Moore because they are too much like Ternent and we needed a different sort of coach. I was sad to see Ternent go but realistically it was time for a new breed to run the club.

I hope Cotterill improves the club and moves us further up the table than be in a relegation battle again. If you look around the leagues it is the younger managers who are doing well like Dowie, Megson, McClaren and Bruce so I do hope he is like these managers and can do something with this great club.

Good luck Cotterill, I'll be there cheering you and the team on next season.

Jonny Helm

Steve Cotterill has done well at Cheltenham but that is lower division football. It is a big test for him and the chances are he won't blow it.

Adam Brerley

First things first, welcome and good luck to Steve Cotterill. He'll need it, succeeding Stan is one of the hardest jobs in football.

But he is not trying to do that and I don't know why some of you think that is his main task. He doesn't want to be compared to Stan, he wants to get on with his new job and the Burnley faithful should respect him for taking the job.

We should support him and the lads in return for their commitment.

Don't be negative about him, respect him because at the end of the day it is he who I believe will take us to unbelievable heights.

Tom Spillane, Rochdale

Firstly welcome Steve.

As many of the fans have already said I think the new appointed manager needs some time to make his mark and stamp his own style on the clarets. Hopefully not too much time though.

Also being resident in the Stoke on Trent area I would love Steve to do an excellent job and move the Clarets to the higher end of the table. A double slap in the face for the Stoke fans.

As far as I can tell there are three major ingredients that he will need to be successful, Support from everyone, commitment from himself and the team and cash from the board.

All the best Steve and Up the clarets.

Dave Hunter, Stone near Stoke on Trent

I think we should give Steve a chance. Give him time to see how he uses his tactics, how the team play, how many games we win, and most of all what position we are in.

Then we can criticise him or praise him but at the moment just give him a chance.

Jordan North

Welcome to Turf Moor Steve

I believe that the time was right for a change of manager as I was becoming tired of the same old excuses from Stan and his constant playing of players out of position.

I think that the small number of contracted players may prove to be a blessing as Steve can now look at bringing in his own playing staff from day one.

Just one request. Please Clarets fans give the guy some time. We have to appreciate that we are no longer one of the big teams (especially when you look at the calibre of teams that are in the Division next season) and have no divine right to be successful.

I think that we have appointed one of the up and coming generation of new forward thinking managers and given the support of the Board and the fans we can move on to greater things

Up the Clarets

John Melia, Littleborough

It's hard to see Steve Cotterill pulling up too many trees next season because he won't have the budget.

I know little about him but I haven't seen any mention of a track record in revamping youth set ups, which I seem to recall was one of the reasons why we sought a change of manager.

If he is being paid less than Stan Ternent, then to achieve a similar finishing position in the League to 2003/2004 would represent a step in the right direction for the club.

I hope Steve Cotterill can use his coaching knowledge to put an end to the regular 4s, 5s and 6s flying in to our net. I also hope he realises what a tough job he has taken on with regard to his personal sanity due to the high level of expectation from Burnley fans - after a few months they'll all love him or all hate him and sometimes it's a very fine line between the two. I wish him all the best.

Philip Brecknell

While sympathising with Stan, and acknowledging that he did a good job for a while, he appeared to have run out of steam, so I am inclined to agree that it was time for a change.

Sometimes change is necessary, and I, at least, wasn't looking forward to another season of hanging around near the bottom of the table, with Stan reporting that the lads could have done better, or that he was very cross, or whatever; we've had a couple of seasons like that already.

I am also aware, being an older supporter, that the only successful managers we have ever had in my lifetime (fifty-something) have been ex-players, though of course not all ex-players in the end made successful managers. But this is surely superstition.

There isn't any logical reason why we can't have a successful manager who never played for us, and maybe Mr. Cotterill is the one. I must admit I had favoured Eric Black at the beginning - he was only dumped from Coventry because their vain chairman fancied a 'big name' (Peter Reid!), and Black had apparently been doing a grand job, as David Frost used to say (for older readers).

But in the end, the selection process, which I was obviously not involved in, has brought out the man who got the job, and we should wait to see what he does with it, and expect the best, not the worst. I also agree with the correspondent who said that hiring Brian Flynn or Steve McMahon would have been much like keeping Stan on, so let's see what happens next.

Jonathan Blake

I think he's a good appointment just put off by how he left Stoke but I guess I’m being naïve, there's no loyalty in football and money talks.

Having said that there are some people who honour their contracts I hope he gives new contracts to Mark McGregor, David May & Paul Weller.

Bruce Payne

All that I have to say is that he seems a keen young manager and we should reserve judgement until we have seen who he brings to the club and the results start rolling in.

I feel Stan had taken us as far as he could and I wish him luck in the future wherever he ends up.

Derek Walby

It was clear that Stan had lost the ability to get consistent performances from all of his players and his inability to sort out the defence over the last two seasons almost cost us our Div 1 status.

Without Gareth last year and Robbie this year, we would have been relegated. Our youth policy produced Chappy, but has not produced anything like what it should have in terms of other young players forcing themselves into the side.

Anybody who remembers the sixties and seventies will know what I mean. Barry Kilby andthe board have conducted themselves with great dignity over the whole situation and deserve our credit and support.

Once a Claret, always a Claret

Rennie Gould, Somerset

The view (from afar - t'other side of the pond!) is that Steve Cotterill's appointment heralds a new era for the Clarets.

Stan did a good job, but the time was right for Burnley to take it to the next level. Burnley's board was astute in recognising that having taken Burnley to the brink of the playoffs twice, but missing badly last season, a change was necessary.

Stan will probably benefit from the change as much as we all hope will the Clarets. There's going to be a buzz of excitement with the change; lots of new faces in the team. Let's hope all this anticipation is rewarded with progress up the table.

Nigel McWilliam – Leesburg, Virginia

I was gutted when I first heard that Stan was leaving the Turf, but it's happened and we now have to look to the future.

I think the appointment of Steve Cotterill is a great one. He's young and ambitious and if he wants to fulfil his personal ambitions with us, then that's fine by me.

I think starting with only 8 players is also good news, he can come in and immediately build his own squad. I think this coming season is going to be very exciting and I'm praying Steve can do for us what Iain Dowie has done for Palace.

If I wasn't a poor student living over 200 miles from the Turf I'd have a season ticket. Unfortunately I'll have to deal with seeing Burnley's rise to the Premiership at the few games I can afford to go to and through the papers.

To all other Clarets, get behind Steve and the team, and BELIEVE. Burnley's time in the top flight is on its way. Keep supporting the club in every way you can and we'll be in the Premiership before you know it.

Steve Bradshaw, Herts

Bold choice with others in the frame but if he can sort out our dismal defence we might be looking at top 10 next season. Stan had his chance to get the defence right and never did, so he had to go.

Phil Challoner – West Midlands

Why are some being so negative. Burnley have just appointed a young, fresh blooded man who has a good previous track record. 3 Promotions, FA Trophy and he got them to the 5th round of the FA Cup in a run where they beat Burnley. Remember that?

He has promised to make the players give their all and play good football. i think we should give the guy a chance and get over Stan.

Jennifer Brooks

Supporters should realise that the board has made a decision on appointing Steve as our new manager, albeit rather late in the day, some four weeks after the departure of Stan.

My opinion is that someone should have been in the frame before Stan left. With only eight contracted players, and the new season almost upon us, Steve has to work quickly, and with limited funds, its going to be another very difficult season for us.

We should all give him and the club our support.

Leslie London

All the best to Stan and I hope he does well where ever he goes. I think Stan did great for the club but it comes to a point that you can only do so much.

Roll on the new manager and i hope he takes the club forward and not into the bad old days.

Jason Kostilek

I'm absolutely delighted for Steve and the club and looking forward to the start of the new era. I would have been happy with two or three of the other men rumoured to have been in the running for the post but I think that our board has picked the best of them.

Stan has left us in the first division which is a great achievement. Here's hoping that we can build on that. I don't expect us to shoot straight up to the Premiership (and beyond!) but in the next few years, who knows? Well done BK.

Steve Margolis

I think given the chance Stan may have done better next season, he was a good manager and will miss him.

But we have got to give Steve a chance, I wish him good luck and hope we have a good season.

John, Norfolk

Good luck to Steve. He has a tough job ahead of him and I wish him the best of luck. Clarets fans need to get behind the new manager.

Let's hope he can bring in a few players and get us off to a good start at the beginning of the season!

Layla Marks

This is a very good appointment in my opinion, I was genuinely afraid that the board would get in a old duffer who is famous yet is guaranteed to get us relegated by February such as a manger like, Venables, Francis, Graham or Wilkinson.

With only having eight players he will quickly make the team his own and, hopefully, we will have a top half finish this year (If the manager is able to bring in the players he wants).

All in all a promising signing that should gain the club relative success.

Christine Waddington

I think it is a great appointment and I hope we the fans give him a fair crack. I also hope that for once we can look forward as a club rather than continuing to dwell on the past.

There are a number of the younger (inexperienced) breed of manager now in the Premiership - Dowie, Sturrock and Worthington spring to mind.

I well remember the chants of "you don't know what you're doing" aimed at Nigel Worthington when the Clarets beat Norwich 3-2 at Carrow Road in our first season back in Div 1 and living in Norwich at the time I remember the knives were well and truly out, but their board gave him time and I hope we do the same.

We desperately needed a change and many of the other names bandied around would not in my view have achieved this. Well done Barry Kilby & Dave Edmundson.

Graham Coxall

It was a bold and decisive decision. The future of the club counts first and foremost .It is a push towards a better horizon. Support from one and all is very essential.

Cotterill having a good command of the game can make it. No time to tear the hairs as all fans should be behind him in his ambitious re-building programme of a great club - Burnley FC.

Bhurdwaz Mungur from Mauritius

I'm sure Steve Cotterill must be delighted Burnley have only 8 players on the books. It won't take him two years to get his OWN team. He can immediatly get players he likes, rates and will do the job for him.

I think it's a great choice - no disrespect to Stan & Sam, but if he can coach our back four to defend that will be a huge step forward. A new goalkeeper I think as well.

A quality appointment of an ambitious manager - fair play to Kilby.

His signings will be key to if he is going to inspire the Burnley faithful.

Phil Avison

Great appointment. I've always been a big Stan supporter but I'm also a great Kilby fan. He has put millions of his own money into the club so he has more to lose than anyone, and he was close to Stan, so he must have really sensed it was time for a change.

It was no use getting Flynn or Moore - otherwise we might as well have kept Stan. Cotterill is just what we want - young, good coach and used to running clubs with no money. We don't know the reasons he left Stoke so quickly but he was very loyal to Cheltenham.

We all make mistakes and he will have learned a lesson from the Sunderland experience. The only criticism I have is that his surname is a bit of a mouthful for "Steve Cotterill's Claret and Blue Army"!!

Up the Clarets!!!

Jean - Perth, Western Australia

Have Burnley Football Club learned nothing in the last 25 years? Whenever a manager has been appointed from outside the club it has been a disaster.

Remember Bond, Benson, Buchan? The ‘B’ didn’t stand for Burnley that’s for sure. I hope I’m just a whinging old fart who is proved wrong in the course of time, but I definitely have that sinking feeling.

Keith Dale

A good move forward for the club. We need to develop the youth set up and push our way back up that league. Who better to do it than one of the brightest up and coming managers in the game. Stan was great and we must thank him and never forget what he did for the club, but he had taken us as far as he could. We were not moving forward and change was needed.

In response to others, STOP BEING NEGATIVE. The reason we are in our current situation is because we have spent the last 2 years feeling sorry for ourselves over the ITV Digital con. We lost the money and we are not getting it back so we have to deal with it.

Now the board are doing something about it. Who knows whether they have chosen wisely, only time will tell. One thing is for sure if we get on Steve Cotterill’s back now then he won’t last 2 minutes and we will be facing relegation in 12 months. If we are positive we might just take a few people by surprise, just like our first 2 seasons back in Div 1. Everybody was buzzing back then and we almost did the unthinkable – promotion to the Premiership.

Calling all Burnley Fans – Go and get a season ticket and lets really get behind the club.

You've got to BELIEVE to SUCCEED
.

Graham Denney

A very good appointment. Steve Cotterill fits the mould of the young ambitious manager many fans felt this club needed to make progress.

Cotterill also commands experience to compliment his ambition and good name in the football world, with this no doubt giving him the edge over Eric Black and Phil Brown.

I was worried we were going to appoint another 'Stan', such as Ronnie Moore or Steve McMahon. The last thing we needed was another abrasive, outspoken character.

Mr Kilby and Mr Edmundson have made an appointment that glows with common sense, we have a manager who has a very good reputation and desire to succeed. I hope, on a personal level that this new method of forward thinking continues beyond this appointment.

Daniel Kendall

No rush, no great fanfare in the national press, no glitz, and no showboy manager. What a very Burnley way of doing things.

We don't have bags of money to splash around, and it's good to see our board's ambition mixed with a sufficient dose of reality to make the future look bright. The future may not bring immediate success, but it's a sensible foundation upon which to pin our hopes.

The future is Claret and Blue.

Andrew Bonner

It wasn't the appointment I would have expected or chosen really, but now he's here let's give him all the support we can.

There are a lot of things in Cotterill's favour: youth, experience for his age, proven track record albeit in the lower divisions, etc. What I do hope is that his perceived lack of loyalty will not be sorely tested by impatient fans, eager to put a man down instead of giving him a chance.

Let's face it we are not promotion material and will not be for the next 2-3 seasons barring exceptional circumstances, so I will take survival by any means until then. If that means boring long ball football by Stevie and the boys then that's fine. A good manager is one who can use the resources available in the best way possible. I'm confident that the new man is as good as we could have found.

Daniel Smith

Great Appointment. Tell me if I'm wrong (and I was/am a fan of Stan) but was not our only "success" under Stan promotion from Div 2 to Div 1 as runners up (by the skin of our teeth in the last game at Scunthorpe while Gillingham lost at Wrexham)? So what is lower league and what is not?

Yes we had two fantastic seasons just missing the play offs whilst spending ITV funny money on losers like Alan Moore. Why do you think the club is in the dire financial straits we now find ourselves in? Not all Stan's fault I agree Mr A Watson has some responsibility for that.

I saw a lot of Steve Cotterill's Cheltenham down here at Stevenage as well as their cup victory over us and he can put together a decent side no doubts. To my mind he's very welcome and like the majority view on here we should get behind the man from this his first day.

Up the Clarets
