Stan leaves Priestfield

He went there in December, taking over a side that was staring relegation in the face but he immediately turned around their fortunes and into the last month of the season it did look as though their chances of survival were high.

It went to the last day of the season, in fact five minutes from the end of the last match, when Eugen Bopp scored against them for already relegated Nottingham Forest, and they went down after five years in this league.

There’s been some speculation about Ternent’s future since but Gillingham Chairman Paul Scally (I wonder just how on earth these two ever got on) has said today, “It is with much regret that, despite putting forward what the Club believes to be an attractive package, we have been unable to persuade Stan Ternent to take the job of manager for the forthcoming season.”

Scally has confirmed that former manager Hessenthaler won’t be considered for the job but will continue playing for the next two years. He said there are a number of excellent candidates to see over the next two or three days and it looks as if Ronnie Jepson has not been ruled out.

Scally added, “Whilst we are unable to work with Stan next season we may, of course, be able to agree a package with Ronnie, and I will certainly be talking with him over the next few days.”

Stan was linked with the Rotherham job last month and in the last couple of weeks with the vacancy at Barnsley which was given to Andy Ritchie just a couple of days ago. I suspect he might just be looking for a job closer to home.
