Stan gets a Century

Last updated : 07 October 2003 By Tony Scholes

He reached the magical 100 in all competitions during last season and it looked at that time as though the league century could be reached by the end of 2002/03. But a poor run towards the end of the season put paid to that and he was still five short of the 100.

Eventually on Saturday he reached that figure and in a total of 242 league games. Of the remaining 142 games 80 have been lost and 62 drawn.

The first win was back in August 1998 when two Andy Payton goals secured a 2-1 home victory on the opening day of the season, Payton’s first was the first Football League goal of the new season.

We had to wait a little longer for the first away win, it was the seventh attempt. But when it did come it was emphatic enough, a 4-0 win at Colchester. That wait was no surprise though, the travelling Burnley fans were used to not winning away from home with only three or four victories in some seasons.

That is no longer the case and five away wins has been our lowest return in the last five seasons and a total of 38 league games have been won away from Turf Moor alongside the 62 home victories.

With some of the heavy defeats it is perhaps inevitable that we have conceded more goals than we have scored and the goal difference in that period is minus 17 with 327 goals scored and 344 conceded.

Andy Payton has scored more of those goals than any other player with 60, well clear of Gareth Taylor’s 36. And Glen Little has played in more of the games than any other with a total of 184 appearances.

The biggest of the 100 wins was the 5-0 victory over Wrexham in the promotion season of 1999/2000.

Stan will be reaching another landmark soon and there will be more of that when it happens. For now though congratulations to him on reaching the 100 victories in the league.
