Stan disappointed but Brown is happy

It has always been said that to lose one of anything can be considered unfortunate but to lose two is downright careless. With the Marlons though Burnley have had apparently no choice with us unable to offer either of them anything worth accepting.

There has been no suggestion that Marlon1 (Beresford) was offered anything but Marlon2 (Broomes) was offered an eight week deal with no guarantee of anything to follow. Under those circumstances it is hardly surprising neither of them will be lining up for the Clarets this weekend. It all rather makes our team photograph look pretty ridiculous now with both of them on it.

Stan always said that he would have liked to have signed both of them but said today that we were not in a position to offer them anything and added that it is a fact of life. He will consider loan signings but that is going to be more difficult this season. Despite clubs being allowed more the transfer restrictions being brought in with the transfer windows is going to mean clubs less willing to let players go out on loan.

He also said that we had received offers during the summer for some of our players although he obviously did not name the players. The offers though were not acceptable and right now there have been no departures.

Preston manager Craig Brown is delighted with the capture of Broomes from under our noses and said that Clive Middlemass has been keeping tabs on him. He won’t be in the Preston side on Saturday though Brown claimed and will have to work for a place.

The fact that Middlemass had been watching him prompted the most ridiculous of comments elsewhere on the net that suggested that in future pre-season games should be played behind closed doors to stop the likes of Preston getting free access to our players. He described them as vultures although I would just say they have been very professional.

Preston have money that we don’t and this report never took into account the fact that we could only offer Broomes an eight week deal. He is one Marlon that won’t be coming back.
