Special guest is no surprise

That list includes such as Jimmy McIlroy and Andy Lochhead, amongst others, but there can be no doubting the credentials of the former player chosen for tonight, none other than David Eyres.

Believe it or not he's retired now, after playing last season for Hyde and Mossley, mind you he is 43-years-old and was still playing league football for Oldham until the end of the 2005/06 season after which he was released by then manager Ronnie Moore.

Eyresy joined the Clarets in 1993 signed by Jimmy Mullen and he was with us for just over four years before being sold to Preston, the club's financial position making it impossible to turn the offer down. During those four years he'd had his ups and downs, a massive crowd favourite who was then targeted by the boo boys for a while before winning back his popularity.

His best moment for us was obviously that fantastic day in May at Wembley when he scored our equaliser against an undisciplined Stockport side as we won promotion via the play offs, but by the time he left he was the club captain, had even survived the idea of Heath's to play him at left back, and was as popular as ever.

He was 33, so most thought his career was coming to an end. Not on your life and he remained in the league for another nine years, with Preston and then finally with Oldham and he played more games for Oldham than any of his other clubs.

Eyresy has said he can't lose tonight, either us or Oldham will win, but likewise he said he can't win because either us or Oldham will be knocked out. Either way he will be guaranteed a good reception from the home fans, and I think it is fair to say he will be guaranteed a good reception from the Oldham fans as well.
