Kyle in action during tonight's win
A poor result on Saturday, a 3-0 home reverse against Iceland, forced manager Lawrie Sanchez to make changes, and although Steve Jones again spent the entire game on the bench it ensured both Kyle and Duff got starts, for Kyle his first in the green of his country.

They have both featured in an inspired win for the Irish, twice coming from behind to win 3-2 against a side including such as Raul, Xabi Alonso, Carles Puyol, Fernando Torres and David Villa. The hero was Leeds striker David Healy who grabbed a hat trick but the two Clarets made telling contributions.

Michael Duff defended well, he certainly impressed the BBC Northern Ireland commentary team, although he was caught out the once and received a yellow card. He was still on at the end but Kyle was forced off less than ten minutes into the second half and replaced by James Quinn.

He'd done more than enough though in his first international start and at half time former Burnley striker Billy Hamilton was asked who he thought the key men were making the difference. Billy said: “I'm really, really impressed with young Kyle Lafferty, at eighteen years of age to come into a game like this against seasoned defenders and knock them about and win so much in the air. He's been a revelation and he's going to be a cult hero.”

At the end the Irish came back onto the pitch to take one more ovation from the Windsor Park crowd. At one point Michael Duff was leading the dancing, and Kyle dashed off to get himself a sombrero as he joined in. A great night for the Irish, and a great for Burnley FC, with three of our players in the squad.
