Skippy is back

Steve, one of the 25 players nominated for the Wall of Legends, is not a stranger at the club, and his most recent visit was back in April when he entertained supporters at the Supporters' Clubs Real Player of the Year Evening.

He arrived at Burnley, a rugby union playing youngster, just in time to have a major impact on the youth team as we lifted the FA Youth Cup for the one and only time in 1968 and was soon in the first team causing some of the English game's top full backs some major problems with his pace and strength.

In 1969/70 season he was leading scorer in the side, not bad for a winger, but within a couple of years his place came under threat from Leighton James and in the summer of 1972 he finally moved on to Wolves.

Over five years later we were struggling and manager Harry Potts turned to Steve, paying £100,000 to bring him back and he helped turn things round in a magnificent end to the season. During his second, two year stay, he played a major part in starting a riot by scoring against Celtic, and then turned in a masterful performance at Oldham to ensure we won the Anglo Scottish Cup, all that on top of lifting us well away from the relegation zone.

By late 1979 we'd dropped towards the bottom again and Steve moved on to 4th Division Huddersfield, helping them to promotion before a knee injury ended his career. He remained at Leeds road for a while on the commercial side before leaving the game altogether.

Now he's an after dinner speaker, and a good one at that, and is always a welcome visitor to the Turf.
