Shrimpers want O'Neill return

Brown has probably been topping up his tan with the current heat wave hitting Britain, but he broke off to confirm he'd very much like the Clarets' right back to return for another loan.

O'Neill has spent much of the last two seasons on loan at York, Southend, Scunthorpe and Leyton Orient but having had a successful time at York, he signed for Southend in January 2014, making an immediate debut in a 3-0 win against Chesterfield in January 2014.

What proved to be a serious injury forced him off just before half time and he was ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Southend press are now reporting that they would like him back although suggesting a loan is the most likely with O'Neill having a year remaining on his current contract at Turf Moor.

Any hopes he had of being first choice at Burnley following the departure of Kieran Trippier were soon ended when Matt Lowton became our first summer signing and it wouldn't be a surprise to see Sean Dyche allow him back out on loan for at least part of next season.

He's made just two appearances for us since arriving from Mansfield three years ago. He played the full two hours of the Capital One Cup tie against Plymouth in August 2012, a game we won on penalties, and then came on as a stoppage time substitute for Trippier in the last game of the season against Ipswich.

He has made 37 league appearances since for his loan clubs and netted a goal too for York when they played him in midfield against Chesterfield, the game ending 2-2.
