Shawcross and Shittu complete the defence

The plan was for the winner of the poll to go into the team with the remaining fifteen players going into a second poll for the second central defensive berth, but that wasn't needed when Shawcross and Shittu were joint winners.

In what has been the closest contest so far both polled 16.8% of the vote to take the two places whilst Blackpool's Kaspars Gorkss surprisingly took third place with 12.7% of the vote just ahead of Leon Barnett at West Brom.

For Shawcross it has been a first season in first team football other than a couple of very late Carling Cup substitute appearances for Manchester United. He joined Stoke on loan at the beginning of the season before Tony Pulis made the deal permanent in January for £1 million.

Shawcross has played in all but five of Stoke's league games during the season on the way to the Premier League, and they failed to win any of the five games he missed. He also netted seven goals in the Championship and went on to be capped for England at under-21 level.

Our second central defender is Danny Shittu and he too contributed seven league goals for his club Watford, one of which came as they went down 2-1 to the Clarets at Vicarage Road.

For the first half of the season Shittu must have thought he was heading back to the Premier League but by the end of the season he and his Watford team must have been thankful just to reach the play offs.

That gives us a keeper and back four of: Adrian Basso (Bristol City), Bradley Orr (Bristol City), Ryan Shawcross (Stoke), Danny Shittu (Watford) and Paul Robinson (West Brom).

Now it is time to start voting for the midfield and the new poll, now available on the front page, is to choose a player for the right hand side of a midfield four. It will be followed later this week with a poll for the player on the left.
