Shaun Parker – A True Claret

Affectionately known as ‘Blind Shaun’ having lost his sight during childhood he was a supporter who you could just about guarantee would be there when Burnley Football Club needed support.

He went to virtually every match, home and away, at various functions run by the Football Club. He just wanted to support the club in any way he could.

He made light of his disability and would enjoy the banter when we went to games. At meetings he would always, along with his guide dog, take a seat on the front row to, as he would tell us, get a better view.

He travelled with Boundary Clarets to the away fixtures and became a close friend of their travel organiser Paul Smith who said this week, "It’s a massive blow to me and to all our members.

"Tears have already been shed and I dare say there will be more shed at the funeral because he was such a well-liked man."

Shaun had a superb and sharp sense of humour and often had the coach in fits of laughter to and from away matches. He became a friend to each and every one of us. It will no doubt be strange on our travels next season without him. There will be a gap on the coach that will be impossible to fill.

It is fitting that when he died in Burnley General Hospital on Wednesday he was wearing his beloved Claret & Blue with a Burnley scarf around his neck.

His funeral will take place next Wednesday and any supporter wishing to pay their respects can do so outside Turf Moor when the funeral cortege passes at 10:30 a.m. before making its way to the crematorium for 11:00 a.m.

You are asked to wear your Claret & Blue shirt and take your place on Harry Potts Way.

The family have requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations are made to the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Our thoughts are with Shaun’s family at this time – we hope they can find the strength to help them through.

God Bless Shaun.
