Shackell has come from behind, just as he did last season, to go to the top of the table and he's followed up his man of the match and player ratings winning performance at Hull by doing likewise in the home draw with Stoke.
It was very much a day for defenders with most of the points going to our goalkeeper and three of our back four, with only Ings besides them finishing in either top four.
Shackell, who hadn't won a man of the match vote since the last match of last season at Reading, until last week, came out on top again with 24.4% of the vote. His central defensive partner Michael Duff took second place with a 14.9% share and behind him were Ings and Kieran Trippier who won third and fourth places with 12.9% and 12.4% of the vote respectively.
It was Shackell again on top in the player ratings. HIs rating of 7.52 out of 10 took him above Trippier who was second with 7.45. Tom Heaton was third with 7.24 with Duff claiming fourth place with a rating of 7.14 out of 100.
It's another maximum ten points for Shackell towards the player of the year, with four points each for Duff and Trippier and two points apiece for Heaton and Ings.
Added to the season's totals, Shackell now leads the table with 111 points, ten above the 101 won by Ings. That means Shackell is at least the joint winner and will win it overall should he get a point or Ings doesn't win both the vote and the ratings at Villa.
The fight for third place is an interesting one. Ashley Barnes holds it just now with 79 votes but all of George Boyd, Duff and Heaton are now just one point behind him.
That last Villa vote will start on Sunday within an hour of the final whistle.
