Season at an end for Lafferty and Varga

Kyle Lafferty - out for season
Varga's absence won't come as a surprise but Lafferty, who has not missed a league game all season other than suspensions has seen his season come to an end suddenly after having had emergency surgery to remove his appendix.

Lafferty started to have trouble following the home defeat to Sheffield United and was rushed to hospital on Sunday night with suspected appendicitis. That's what it proved to be and he's now had it removed but will be out of action for the next four to five weeks as he recuperates.

Varga though hasn't played since the home game against Wolves. He'd missed three games earlier but had been back for the games against Stoke, Charlton and Wolves. However, he was substituted in that game and despite having had more injections they have had no effect and he now faces surgery.

It will surely mean that Varga has played his last game for Burnley with his loan coming to an end at the end of the season. For Lafferty, there's still plenty of speculation around that he won't be a Burnley player come August but he remains a player manager Owen Coyle definitely wants to keep hold of.

Lafferty's absence could see Ade Akinbiyi return to partner Andrew Cole or alternatively Robbie Blake could move back into a central role.
